How to stop night terrors

Losing sleep due to night terrors?

While more common in children, anyone can suffer from night terrors.

But, there are still many unanswered questions surrounding this type of sleep disorder. To shed some light on the topic, here’s how to stop night terrors.

No one deserves a bad night’s sleep!

What are Night Terrors?

Night terrors are not to be confused with nightmares. While they have some similarities, there are some major differences that define the two.

The definition of night terrors is that they are a sleep disorder characterised by feelings of terror or dread upon waking up from sleep. Therefore, the difference between night terrors and nightmares is that the latter is a form of dreaming.

The fear comes because night terrors occur during deep sleep, while nightmares occur during REM sleep.

What are Night Terrors Like?

Those that suffer from night terrors describe them as waking up in extreme fear, without knowing why.

As night terrors aren’t dreams, it’s difficult to know where the fear comes from.

The symptoms of night terrors can vary. Many people suffer from screaming in sleep and not remembering. All they’re aware of is waking up in fear.

What Causes Night Terrors?

There are a number causes, which can make preventing night terrors difficult. These include:

• Stressful life events
• Sleep deprivation
• Heavy medications
• Recent surgery
• Trauma

This is not an exhaustive list of the reasons for night terrors. However, they are some of the most common causes.

What Causes Night Terrors in Kids?

The causes of night terrors in children differs slightly, such as a fever, illness, or changes to routine. However, the causes can be the same, such as stress, meaning those dealing with night terrors are encouraged to talk to other sufferers to find out what helped them.

Another cause in both adults and children is when the central nervous system is overly active during sleep.

But, sometimes, there can be no rational cause for night terrors, which can seem infuriating. However, there are cures and remedies to help you get a restful sleep.

How to Get Rid of Night Terrors

Wondering how to prevent night terrors?

While there’s no universal cure that works for everyone, medication is said to help. However, there are some natural remedies for night terrors you can try:

Dealing with Stress

Dealing with external factors that may be going on in your life is one of the best ways to overcome sleep problems.

Going to bed with problems running through your mind will not help you sleep well!

Have a Relaxing Bedtime Routine

There are many ways to relax and unwind before bed. You may already relax as part of your bedroom routine, however, it’s particularly important if you suffer from night terrors.

Whether it’s having a bath, reading a book or listening to some quiet bedtime music, find what works for you! The trick is to make yourself feel comfortable and ready for bed.

Get a Good Amount of Sleep

It may sound obvious, but try to get a decent amount of sleep at night. Lack of sleep will contribute to night terrors and make the symptoms worse!

Keep a Diary

Keeping a diary of the nights you have episodes is one of the best pieces of advice for dealing with night terrors.

You want to work out patterns, to help you understand what your triggers are. This way, you can prevent night terrors in the future!

How to Cure Night Terrors in Toddlers and Young Children

For parents, watching your child suffer from night terrors can be extremely distressing. But, it’s important to remember that they don’t cause long-term psychological problems.

However, the lack of sleep and upset they cause can be enough to make children scared of going to bed.

So, if you’re feeling helpless and want to know how to get rid of night terrors for your child, here are a few top tips:

Waking Your Child Up

It may sound strange, but scheduling awakenings for your child interrupts the sleep pattern that causes their night terrors.

Do this 2-3 hours after your child has fallen asleep. They might not like it at first, but they’ll be grateful if it helps cure their night terrors!

Be Comforting

It can be difficult to know how to help someone with night terrors. However, offering some comfort and support won’t go amiss.

You want to show you’re there for them, without revealing any frustration you may feel. Sleep terrors can be extremely distressing for children, therefore knowing you’re there to comfort them when they wake up will be a comfort.

Have a Set Bedtime

Bedtime routines help solve many problems!

Particularly if your child is suffering from night terrors as a result of a change in routine at home, such as a change of schools, a clear bedtime will help them settle.

Keep the Environment Safe

If your child is particularly prone to thrashing about during an episode, make sure they don’t injure themselves in anyway.

It can be hard to know what to do during a night terror, but keeping your child safe is a top priority.

Make the Room Comfortable

Make the bedroom as inviting and cosy as possible!

If your child has fear of going to bed as a result of their night terrors, give them a reason to look forward to sleeping.

Luxury Organic Cotton White Bedding Sets

Review

I’m writing this review after having the luxury set for a year, I bought it last Christmas and i bought another last week. I can confidently say these sheets are great and so comfortable. They wash beautifully, and the soft feeling just gets better each time. At the time I thought they were expensive, but for the quality I now think they are worth every penny. I look forward to enjoying my bedding for years to come.

love my bedsheets

My goodness, really impressed with how soft these sheets get after several washes. Great product! love that they are organic and fair trade certified. It’s also refreshing to find a company in the uk that does raw cotton, unbleached bedding. Very happy. Keep up the good work

Lovely Soft Bedding

I was really keen to try this 100% organic cotton bedding and I’m not disappointed in how soft it feels and is lovely and cosy to sleep in. My only concern is the bottom fitted sheet seems a little too big even though I have a deep mattress with a topper on too but even so the sheet just seems a bit baggy. I’m also a little saddened with how it creases after being slept in which means it looks a little messy after the bed has been made. The bedding is really well made and feels lovely but I’ve only used it once so will see how it performs after further washes.

great bedding

My husband never notices anything i buy, but even he commented on how soft our bedding was. One purchase he and I are extremely happy about. would definitely recommend.
